How to Apply Makeup: Going Back to Basics With the rise of social media, there's been an influx of YouTube beauty gurus and Instagram makeup artists. They're all extremely talented showing off their skills in creating dramatic and glamorous looks. But what about the people who just want to know how to get the most out of their mascara? Or how to correctly apply blusher without looking like a blotchy clown. It's harder than you'd think to find simple tutorials on how to apply makeup correctly. So, we think it's time to strip it back and go back to basics. Read our top tips for the best techniques, tips and tricks on how to apply makeup.

The Right Shades for Your Eye Colour

Getting your eyes to pop is not as hard as you think. All you really need is to know what shades are best suited to your eye colour. The Right Shades for Your Eye Colour Brown Eyes: Deep purples, navy blues, and forest greens can help lighten and brighten brown eyes. Blue Eyes: Light and dark greys, navy blue, warm oranges, golds and bronze can play off your eye colour making it appear as though the shade has changed to the naked eye. Green Eyes: Rich colours like plums, violets, browns and golds can really play with those lighter flecks in your iris, giving the illusion that your eyes have changed colour. Hazel Eyes: To add depth to this gorgeous eye colour try a smokey rich brown or a deep forest green. To lighten them use a gold, violet, or olive green.

How to Apply Mascara

Mascara is a part of every woman's daily makeup routine. Many constantly hunt from one brand to another trying to find the best product to make their lashes look longer and more voluminous. But did you know, your application technique is just as important as the product itself? First, it's important to curl your lashes. If there are any stubborn stragglers, as noted in our beauty tips post, just warm up your eyelash curler with a hair dryer and voila, you've created a makeshift heat curler for your eyelashes! Once your eyelashes have been curled to your satisfaction, sweep on a few layer of your favourite mineral mascara for optimal volume, length and strength. When applying your mascara, place the wand right at the root of your lashes and then wiggle it upwards to create volume and avoid clumping.

How to Apply Blush

With trends like contouring and strobing being all the rage, the trusty blush often gets pushed to the side. It's usually considered a quick afterthought in makeup tutorials. But you can't just slap it on and hope for the best. It actually requires a unique technique to help create balance and define your best features. Your blusher placement depends on your face shape:how to apply makeupRound Face Shapes: Apply your mineral blusher upwards along the cheekbone and towards the temples. Square Face Shapes: To soften a square or angular face, apply your mineral blush just below your cheekbones and extend towards the hairline. Oval Face Shapes: If you have an oval face shape then you're quite lucky as this shape is fairly symmetrical and so you can play around with your blusher. The only thing we would suggest is to keep your blusher to the apples of your cheeks and avoid extending all the way to the temples so as not to elongate the face. Heart Face Shapes: Use your blusher to create balance and make your face appear less pointed. Start by applying mineral blush below the apples of the cheeks and then sweeping upwards towards the centre of the ear.
