We all know vitamins in your diet are important and a great boost for healthy skin, but what do they do when added into your skincare products, used as topical treatments or even formulated in your makeup? Vitamin A is also known Retinoic Acid, Retinol, Retin-A or Tretinoin and has a multitude of benefits for the dermis. Here are some of the top reasons why it's a super-ingredient for the skin! Ingredient Spotlight: Vitamin A

What Are The Benefits of Vitamin A?

  • The dermis is the middle layer of the skin where collagen and elastin are produced. Collagen and elastin are produced to keep your skin firm and youthful. However, as you age, your skin begins to slow down and lose a lot of its collagen and elastin, as a result, it becomes loose, saggy and wrinkly. Vitamin A works to stimulate and thicken the dermis, encouraging collagen and elastin synthesis to prevent skin from ageing.
  • What's more, Vitamin A normalises blood flow which both increases the rate of wound healing and as well helping to reduce symptoms of rosacea.
  • Vitamin A also aids in making skin smooth and even-toned through its exfoliating properties.
  • Additionally, it is fantastic for helping your skin to protect itself from UV damage as it repairs the cellular structure of the epidermis (the outer skin layer). Although some stronger Retinol topical treatments may cause sensitivity to the sun so you should still make sure to use sun protection.
  • Furthermore, it can help treat hyperpigmentation (aka brown spots, age spots, sun spots etc) as it promotes a deduction in the clustering of melanin granules.
  • Moreover, Vitamin A decreases sebum production, which as a result is excellent in treating acne.
Note: It is strongly advised that women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use retinol serums. Please make sure to discuss the use of any topical Vitamin A with your doctor.
