Is lip liner necessary?

If you want total control over your makeup, a stunning smile, and the nourishing vitamins and antioxidants that come along with it then yes, of course, you simply can't go on without a lip liner. It's particularly important when wearing darker shades of lipstick, but anyone using any shade can see the benefits of using natural lip liners and pencils.

Using a lip liner is not just about keeping your lipstick or lip gloss in place by preventing bleeding and feathering and all of that – it's also used to add definition. This can be a great benefit for people with thin lips. All it takes is a little experimentation with highlighting.

So, think of it almost as a primer, like you would use around the eyes to make your shadow or liner last longer, but also think of it as a way to change your look by creating definition around the lips.

How to apply lip liner

  • Moisturise first: Start with a small amount of moisturising lip balm. Just a light coverage is fine, and it will help provide a smooth base after waiting 10 to 15 minutes for it to dry.
  • Colour choice: Choosing the right colour liner is simple. Use a red liner for red lipstick, a dark liner for dark lipstick, or for a more natural look you would use a liner close to your natural lip colour.
  • Stick to the line: With your mouth slightly open, trace around your natural lip line. Now you have two choices. You can either fill in the entire lip area in preparation for applying makeup, or you can go without lipstick.
  • Without lipstick: After you have traced the outline, don't fill it in. Instead, blend it with your finger and then apply gloss for a more natural look.
